KindieFest 2011, Day 1 (the details)

"There's a certain immortality to what you're doing." -- Kenny Curtis, Sirius/XM.

The third annual KindieFest kicked off in a huge way on Friday night at Littlefield in Brooklyn.  This conference/showcase/festival is an annual event that draws musicians, artists, publicists, bloggers, podcasters, producers and other industry types from all across the country. Following Kenny's keynote, wherein he encouraged us to keep up the good work, Dana and I struck up as many conversations as we…

Kindiefest 2011, Day 1

I don't have a lot of time, I have to rush out the door to catch the panels at Kindiefest this morning. But I just had to take a moment to say how much fun I had last night at the opening reception. Sirius/XM's Kenny Curtis gave a wonderful, upbeat speech (complete with catch-phrase bingo!) and then Dana and I networked heavily (read: drank and mingled with an awesome crowd of fellow Kindie stars).

I'll do my name-dropping thing later. For now I just wanted to say, Two…

Why Sprockster is awesome, reason #46

Thanks to Jesse and Sprockster, The Fuzzy Lemons have appeared on radio and internet shows all around the country!
The following people are to be commended for their commitment to excellence in kindie music. It's an honor to be played alongside all of our favorite family musicians. HUGE shout-outs to:

The Fuzzy Lemons at KZTV, Friday, February 18

We're always thrilled and honored to be part of the fun at KZTV, Mt. Sinai's closed-circuit TV channel for patients. Producer Alayna Kramer and engineer Gerard Edison do a great job putting on shows for their very special audience.

Justin, Dana and I did a scaled-down "unplugged" set this time around. We printed up lists of our songs in advance and Alayna distributed them to the kids in their various room, so the kids could phone in during the show to make requests. And phone in…

Brave New Kindie World

In one of those ubiquitous "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader" tomes, I came across this article:

Strange Bands

There are thousands of musicians out there vying for radio airplay and your CD-buying dollar, so every band has to make itself stand out somehow. Here are some that rely on elaborate gimmicks.

The article went on to describe the First Viennese…

KIDS ROCK was a huge success!

Way back in October, I got this message from Jeremy Zmuda on Sprockster: “We are organizing a fundraiser for our nonprofit, Kids Need A Melody, that provides free music classes, instruments, and books to young children living in the shelter system. We are targeting late January/early February, and want to have a family event with children’s music performances.”

Never one to pass up a worthy family event with fellow Kindie rockers, I wrote back and offered my help (and, of course, the… Continue

2011: the Year of the Lemon

I have to say, with Kipley’s departure I wasn’t sure how to feel about the future of the Fuzzy Lemons. But some exciting things have been happening that are breathing new life into the band. First of all, I just received word that Pandora (the huge online music site) has accepted our application. Within a few months you’ll be able to set up your own Fuzzy Lemons Pandora channel!

Second, and perhaps most importantly, Dana has been working the phones and has been securing gigs for us.…

The Fuzzy Lemons at the Knitting Factory, Sunday, November 14

Another sizzling set at the Knitting Factory! We had a good crowd (not our biggest but not our smallest, either) and a nice long sound check. The current Lemon line-up is pretty tight and the fans seem to dig it; Chris Moran is working out really well as our drummer.

But.

Kipley has announced that he’s moving to Chicago in 2011 and will be stepping back from the Lemons to focus on the move. This is pretty devastating news; there’s no…

The Fuzzy Lemons at Maxwell’s, Sunday, November 7th

Finally, we’re back on our home turn in Hoboken. And what’s more, we’re on stage at one of the greatest rock clubs in NJ history! You can keep your Stone Pony, we’ve got Maxwell’s!

We’ve played Maxwell’s before; we were part of a big Haiti fundraiser last Christmas. But this is the first time we’ve headlined our own show. We hyped…

The Fuzzy Lemons at the Knitting Factory, Sunday, October 24th

Happy Halloween! It’s time for our annual fright-fest and this year we haunt the Knitting Factory!

But first, a note: Last time we played here, Brandon Miller was our drummer. That turned out to be his last show with the Fuzzy Lemons. He’s decided to hang it up (for now) and we’re sad to see him go. Thank you, Brandon,…

The Fuzzy Lemons and Rocknoceros at the Knitting Factory, Sunday, September 19

I’ve actually been in touch with Rocknoceros for about a year now, since my sister introduced me to them (she and her family are fans in the Rockno’s home state of Virginia). I met them face-to-face at Kindiefest and found them to be sweet fellows. Their albums are highly listenable.

Way back in the early summer, I got an e-mail from Rocknoceros’ booking guy. He said the band was going to be in Philly on Sept. 18th, and did I know of any…

The Fuzzy Lemons at Union County MusicFest, Clark, NJ, Sunday, September 12

UC MusicFest has been on the calendar for months, marked with a big red circle. This is a seriously cool show put on by This Is It! Productions, three stages, two days, and LOT of bands, rides and attractions. We did it last year and couldn’t wait to come back. These guys erect a huge stage and bring in an amazing sound crew, and DJ Mickey G is…

The Fuzzy Lemons at Ben & Jerry’s in Ridgewood, NJ, Friday, September 10

Despite threatening grey skies, the weather held out and we had a lovely evening in Ridgewood at the Ben & Jerry’s. It was back-to-school night and the patio held a friendly crowd of families, with kids of all ages grooving to the band and enjoying their ice cream. It wasn’t our tightest gig, maybe, but we got good feedback from the audience and autographed a couple of CDs. Spencer was there with his family; we love seeing those familiar…

The Fuzzy Lemons at All Saints Day School, Tuesday, September 7

It’s back-to-school time! Our old friends at All Saints Day School invited us back to help them celebrate at their big kick-off BBQ. We haven’t played for these guys since April of last year, but they always throw a great party and this was no exception. We played two 30-minute sets for the assembled throng, taking a break in between for burgers, dogs, cookies, brownies… in short, a delightful picnic on a gorgeous September evening!

The Fuzzy Lemons on KZTV, Friday, August 20

What a treat to be back in the groovy little KZTV studio, located at Mt. Sinai hospital on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The staff (Gerard, Alayna and Deepika) were so cheerful and happy to have us there, and set-up took almost no time at all.

The whole thing felt very comfortable (for me, anyway), as if we’d done it a hundred times, when in fact the opposite…

The Fuzzy Lemons at Waterside Plaza, NYC, August 16

We’d been looking forward to this gig for weeks, a chance to get back into Manhattan and rock a proper NYC crowd. And what a venue, a gorgeous patio overlooking the East River. Meanwhile, Time Out NY Kids and a bunch of other sites had listed tonight’s event as their Top Pick (apparently not much happens in town on Mondays).

So it was a real shame when the skies opened up and rained us out!

Waterside’s Community Affairs…

The Fuzzy Lemons at the Knitting Factory, August 15

Wow! We just played an amazing show at the Knitting Factory to a huge crowd! What a thrill!

To be honest, we didn’t know what to expect today. Our last few Knit gigs have trended downward, attendence-wise, a phenomenon we attributed to the warmer weather. (Who wants to sit in a bar on a good beach day?) In fact we were scheduled to play a set there in July and we cancelled it, anticipating an empty house.

But then something cool…

The Fuzzy Lemons at the Kids Kingdom, Mattano Park, Elizabeth NJ, Saturday, August 14

Today was the first of our three gigs with This Is It! Productions’ Traveling Kids’ Kingdom, and what a start it was! Deanna Hunt and the good folks at This Is it! really know how to pull out all the stops and put on a great show.

Our friend DJ Mickey G was there, doin’ his thing as MC. He knows what the kids like! We talked about collaborating with him; Dana has a new song that might be a perfect match for his skills at the turntable. I…
