"Don't wait for inspiration..."

Diving home from a show in western New Jersey this afternoon, I was listening to an interview with writer, Ann LaMott. She wrote (among several) a book called "Bird by Bird", which offers instructions on writing and life.

I've never read the book, but she was summing up her process for writing as described in her book, and something she said really struck me.

"Don't wait for inspiration", she said, "because it never comes and it's just another way to keep yourself from… Continue

Kindiefest 2011, Day 1

I don't have a lot of time, I have to rush out the door to catch the panels at Kindiefest this morning. But I just had to take a moment to say how much fun I had last night at the opening reception. Sirius/XM's Kenny Curtis gave a wonderful, upbeat speech (complete with catch-phrase bingo!) and then Dana and I networked heavily (read: drank and mingled with an awesome crowd of fellow Kindie stars).

I'll do my name-dropping thing later. For now I just wanted to say, Two…

Consistency trumps inspiration

When writing songs, I used to think it was all about the first moment of inspiration... that first time I'd play an interesting progression of chords, or hear a melody in my head. And if it didn't all come to me at once, I usually didn't pursue it much further.

But over the last few years, I've discovered that the songs I'm generally most proud of are NOT the ones that popped into my head nearly complete. The ones I appreciate the most are the ones I've kept coming back to,…

Thanks for the support. It has been a wild first year.

This Saturday we play the Memphis Botanic Gardens annual Family Egg Hunt.  This marks The Friendzies one year anniversary.  It has been a wild and crazy first year.  In this first year we went from being a concept to being the MBG’s children’s house band.  We released our first album Time 2 Play in July of 2010 and are now in the process of ordering our second run.  We can not say thank you enough to everyone who has helped and supported The Friendzies.  It is because of you that this is…

The Irony of Being a "Family" Entertainer

After a few years of working nearly every Saturday and Sunday, I've recently started blocking out a few weekend days every month. While it's not easy for an entertainer to turn down gigs, I realized that, while I'm out there performing for other people's kids, my OWN kids are growing up faster than seems possible.

While, yes, my children often attend my performances, it's not really the same as enjoying the day together as a family. It's work, and while I love the "work" I…

The importance of family music

Welcome to the inaugural blog of Patricia's Music Musing!

For those of you who are parents or grandparents, you probably already know how important age-specific music is to your family.  You might sing or play songs when riding on car trips, putting little ones to bed, being together at play time, dancing in the kitchen and so on.  Sure, you might sing and dance to YOUR favorite songs; don't we all want to share the music we love?  But there is something very special about songs…

Jason Riley Endorses Godin Guitars

A steady courtship has evolved into a special relationship for our guy and one of the favorites in his cast of six strung friends. Jason bought his first Godin as a back-up nylon string in 2003 and put it behind glass… “BREAK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” The glass was soon shards with the instrument becoming JR’s ‘go-to’ nylon string electric both live and in-studio. The pioneering synth access, record-ability, play-ability, good looks and special sauce make the Godin…
