I have 3 CD's that I sell at my shows I do but am considering putting some money into producing a DVD to sell with the new songs I have been writing.  Do any of you have experience in what sells best for you at your shows?  I teach elementary music and I know how the kids love DVD's and am wondering if this is the way to go instead of a cd since adults can download and purchase the songs they want from the web.  Thanks for your input!!!

Good question!  We are in the same boat and have just started entertaining the idea of a DVD ourselves.

What are you thinking of putting on your DVD's?  Yourself, cartoons, photos????
I would like to have either live video of kids dancing the actions to my songs or some animation of cartoon people.  I know live video is much cheaper than animation.
I see many are putting their videos free on You Tube.  Do you think this pays off in more interest in booking you,  than selling Videos at shows?
Being on Youtube seems to be a great way to promote what we do.  I think our audience also wants something better quality they can watch over and over at home.  It's a way to relive the positive concert experience.  Both makes sense if you can afford it.
CD's are great for selling at live shows. mp3 download cards are also pretty handy too. There seems to be quite a mix of people who prefer CD's over mp3 and visa versa. I myself prefer the mp3 download cards, less to lug around you know, however I'll keep hauling those CD's around because some people still like something tangible in their hands. Also, you have to pay taxes on CD's.
As for DVD's, I haven't quite gotten that far yet, but I am currently working on a new DVD release and I plan on using YouTube to promote it to the max. Trailers and samples of the videos. Hopefully some teasers will result in more sales and gigs.

Great discussion!

But something new is up --  just got a new computer and discovered no CD/DVD drive... what do you think the future of discs will be -- digital downloads instead of discs?

Would you say our audience for kids music would rather download mp3s or videos rather than buy physical discs?

What do you sell more of: downloads or discs?

Or finally do you think people love to buy vinyl because it's in right now and get codes for downloads on the vinyl cover?  Somehow I think this is more of a trend for popular music rather than kindie artists.  In the kindie music world I think everything is different as far as music trends go but what do you think?

Yes, this is interesting. My newest computer didn't come with a CD/DVD drive either. Looks like the future is on-demand streaming?
