I notice many companies like Magazines and Parenting Names giving awards charge $300-$400 fees just to have your material reviewed for the awards.  Doesn't this seem like paying for the acknowlegement they give, while they reap a bundle?

I agree, but how else does one get recognition?
Paying for it just doesn't seem right.  I'm used to earning praise for my good work. I have won many awards from Community, State, and others that don't require pay.  I may be wrong, but I think these award companies prey on struggling artists to line their own pockets. It reminds me of the beauty contests for little kids whose parents want recognition for their precious child.  High fees there too.
